Welcome to the latest edition of my World Famous “This and That” column. This time around we hit on some NFL stuff, some Celtics stuff, some Yankees notes, and even the Phoenix Mercury. So without further ado or gilding the lily, let’s jump right in.

NFL Chain Gang Being Replaced
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. The NFL is changing the way it measures first downs from the cool analog chain gang to a virtual video board system. They are not changing it until next season but they have been doing dry runs during the preseason. After seeing it in action during the 49ers preseason game against the Saints, I figured I would explain to you why I don’t like it and think this is a bad idea for multiple reasons.
Continue readingDown on the Farm
Wow. It has been a long time since we checked in with the Yankees prospects down on the farm. There have been some big developments with the guys we have been following all season. At this point let’s not waste any more time and get right to it.
Continue readingUpdate From Yankee Land
It has been exactly a month so we are long over due for a trip down to Yankee Land. A lot has happened since last we visited, some good, some bad. We will get into all of it but first I would like to personally thank the Baltimore Orioles for not running away with the division. I can’t say for sure they did not bet on the Yankees to win the East. As we stand of this writing the Yankees and Baltimore are tied atop the AL East. The Yankees are 6 games ahead of the Red Sox who are the first team out of the playoffs. Their Magic number to secure a playoff spot is down to 35. Let’s get into how we got here.
Continue readingMLB’s Pitcher Injury Problem
A major issue around Major League Baseball this season, and the last few, is the number of pitchers who are getting injured. Pitching injuries have always been a thing in baseball but it seems the rate at which pitchers are going down has increased over the past several seasons. Of course, people are trying to figure out what is causing all of these pitchers to head to the Injured List. As usual though, most people want a simple answer. An easy fix. However, as in the cause of most things, I believe it isn’t one thing that has led us to this place of hoping your guy isn’t the next to go down for the season, but a handful of factors that are causing this rash of injuries.
Continue readingThe Yankees at the Trade Deadline
Today was the Major League Baseball trade deadline. The Yankees made a few moves to try to bolster their roster in an attempt to win yet another World Series. The teams biggest need heading into today was bullpen help and that was where the Yankees focused today. Let’s see what they did.
Continue readingThe Yankees acquire Jazz Chisholm Jr.
The New York Yankees have made their first trade heading into the deadline. They acquired OF/2B Jazz Chisholm Jr from the Marlins for 3 minor leaguers, C/1B Agustin Ramirez, INF Jared Serna, INF/OF Abrahan Ramirez. My initial reaction is that I don’t love this trade, but I don’t hate it either. Before I get into the reasons why, I want to point out that I can’t say I have seen Chisholm play a lot so I am going by stats mostly and my opinion of him may change once I get to watch him play day in and day out on the Yankees. With that said, let’s get into it.
Continue readingThis and That
It’s that time again. That’s right! It’s time for a brand spanking new edition of my world famous This and That column!! This time we will be digging into a little football, a little baseball, and a little basketball. Sadly, there’s no hockey to talk about. Well, without further ado or gilding the lily, lets jump right in.
Continue readingCeltics Summer League Game 4 vs Dallas
Well, another Celtics’ summer league has come to an end. Being their last game, the Celtics sat a lot of their top guys. JD Davison, Neemias Queta, Drew Peterson, Jahmi’us Ramsey, and Jaden Springer all sat this one out. Because of this, I am not going to make this one a true game review but rather I am going to give my overall Summer League impressions of the interesting guys. I am going to preface this by pointing out that when I say I like someone, or that someone looked good, it doesn’t mean I think they are going to be great, or an all star or even a starter in the NBA. You don’t have to be a hall of famer to be a good player. Second thing I want to point out is that the Celtics rotation this season is set. Barring injuries, there is no room for any of these guys to play (Queta the obvious exception as he’s in their rotation with Porzingis out). Some of them, however, may be able to take advantage of an opportunity if one should arise.
Continue readingCeltics Summer League Game 3 vs Charlotte
The Boston Celtics played their third Summer League game this afternoon against the Charlotte Hornets. To be honest with you this game was not pretty until the last five minutes when both teams decided to play well. I haven’t even mentioned the winner or loser of the first two games because it really, really doesn’t matter but it was nice to see the Summer Celtics bare down in a close game and pull out the win.
