In week 13 of the NFL season the San Francisco 49ers traveled to Buffalo to take on the Bills. The Murphy’s Law season marched on as the 49ers fell to the Bills 35-10. Let’s see of there is anything worth talking about in this one.
We will start of with injuries because I don’t want to mess with tradition. Plus, there really isn’t much more to talk about in this one. Nick Bosa, Trent Williams, Deommodore Lenoir, Aaron Banks, and Jordan Elliott all sat this one out. CMC suffered what is most likely a season ending injury. And Kevin Givins left with a chest injury. And it turns out that Fred Warner has been playing on a broken ankle for most of the season. This explains why he has not played up to the defensive player of the year candidate level he was at in the first few games. Obviously, the big one here is CMC. The injury is thought to be to his PCL. It will probably end his season but he should be back by September the latest according to how bad the injury is. It sucks to lose him for the season but at this point it probably won’t matter and Mason is having a better season. There was some good injury news as Purdy returned to action.
Honestly, aside form the injury update, there really isn’t anything to talk about in this one. It’s not because the Niners got blown out, it’s because the snow made it impossible to evaluate what was going on. Both teams struggled to tackle and stop the run so both teams put up big rushing totals. Seems like that would point to the snow being a factor. Moody missed two field goals but as much as I would love him to be nailing field goals in that weather, can you really blame him for missing? I hate when the elements become a factor in sports. Football teams in the north should all have to build domes. To me, not only was this game bad because the Niners did not play well, but it was boring. Just hand off after hand off like it’s 1953 or something. Oh well.
Aside form the snow and injuries, the Niners continued to suffer from Murphy’s law. Every time things were going well, something would go wrong to derail them. To open the second half Deebo breaks off a 60-yard kick return and it looks like the Niners might be able to get back into the game. So, what happens? Kyle Juszczyk fumbles on the 1-yard line. It was one of three fumbles they had on the day. Though I personally thought Purdy’s should have been an incomplete pass.
At some point you just have to chalk this up to a lost season. They are now 2 games out of first in the West and they don’t even play Seattle any more so they can’t make up ground there. Next week they have the Bears at home. Even with all of the injuries, that is a game they have to win. After that, they could lose out. I am not sure that not the best-case scenario. At this point getting the best draft picks possible might be what it best for this team.
I will say this because there is starting to be talk, in now way shape or form should the 49ers even spend a nanosecond on considering firing Kyle Shanahan. Is he perfect? No. But no one else is. Bill Walsh couldn’t turn this team with all it’s injuries and what not into a winner. Shanny is still one of the best coaches around. They are lucky to have him.
Well, this wasn’t much of a game review but as I said, the snow was too big of an issue to really take anything away from the team’s play except to say they have to find a way to be better in the snow. Hopefully someone will step on the injury bug and they can start to field some resemblance of the team they were supposed to have this season. It’s not over yet. Next week could be the start of a big turnaround. Of course they now also need Seattle to fall apart.
