Wow. It has been a long time since we checked in with the Yankees prospects down on the farm. There have been some big developments with the guys we have been following all season. At this point let’s not waste any more time and get right to it.
Ben Rice—Catcher/First Base—AAA Scranton—Ben is still up with the big club. He has struggled of late so I don’t know how much longer he will be there but hopefully they will give him time to sort things out.
Agustin Ramirez—Catcher/1st Base—AAA Scranton—Agustin, sadly, was traded to Miami in the Jazz Chisholm deal. This was the one good deal the Yankees made at the deadline so I am not too upset Ramirez went in the trade. Jazz has been great for the Yanks and should be for the next few years at least.
Caleb Durbin—Infielder—AAA Scranton—Caleb has returned from the injury that has cost him half the 2024 season and is back to his raking ways. In the last 7 days he is hitting .353 with a .476 OBP. The weird thing about Durbin is that he has backwards splits. He is a right-handed hitter but is hitting much better against righties than lefties. All 5 of his home runs are against righties and he has 17 doubles and a triple and a .294 average. Against south paws he is only hitting .255 with just 4 doubles. Obviously, he has had a lot more ABs against righties but still, there is a clear drop off between the two. If he can become a better hitter against lefties, as you would expect from a right-handed batter, he will become one hell of a hitter.
Jasson Dominguez—Outfield—AAA Scranton—Speaking of returning from injury, the Martian has made his return to the line up as well. After a slow start he has turned it on hitting .353 with a homer and 4 stolen bases in the last week. He has weird splits as well. For one, he hits a lot better at home (.355) than away (.194). He’s a switch hitter but is also struggling this season against lefties hitting only .184 against them. Which explains why the Yankees called him up on Sunday to face the best left-handed pitcher in baseball. His callup was only for the one game and he has been sent back to Scranton.
Spencer Jones—Outfielder–AA Somerset—Jones is continuing his up and down season. In August he is hitting .278 with 2 homers, 4 doubles and 9 RBIs. His weird stat is that he hits every other month. In April he hit .320, in May .170, June .296, July .203, and April .278. In June he had 29 RBIs but has not even reached double digits in any other month (obviously he can still do that in August). Just a very weird year for the Yankees number 2 prospect.
Brock Selvidge—Pitcher—AA Somerset—Brock has not pitched since last we talked about him. He has an undisclosed injury and was placed on the 60-day IL on August 12th. I believe it’s retroactive to July 23rd. Either way it seems his season is over. Hopefully at some point I will be able to find out what the injury is but as it’s the minor leagues, I doubt it.
George Lombard—Shortstop—A Tampa—Lombard has been moved up to A+ Hudson Valley. He is taking time to adjust to his new level as he has hit .116 in the 12 games as a Renegade so far. He does have a .240 OBP which is kind of impressive when you’re batting .116. The 19-year-old had a good July hitting .241 with 4 homers and 5 doubles. Hopefully he doesn’t take too long to find his footing in Hudson Valley and can end the season on a good run. The Renegades only have 19 games left in their season.
TJ Rumfield–1st Base–AAA Scranton—I mentioned last time how well TJ was doing so of course he immediately went into a slump. In August he is hitting just .229 with 1 long ball and 8 RBIs. He does have 5 doubles and does have 11 walks to only 9 Ks. So he must still be having good ABs. Hopefully my jinx will wear off soon. If he can get back to hitting the way he did in the first half, he will throw his hat in the ring for the 1st base job next season.
