The Boston Celtics played their second Summer League game last night against the Los Angeles Lakers. Bronny James is on that team in case you missed the play by play guy mention it 10,000 times, even when he was on the bench. Listening to the announcers I am pretty sure he and that Knecht guy were the only two guys in the game. (I so hate watching games without Celtics announcers!) Anywho, lets talk about the guys whom Jared Greenberg wasn’t in love with.
I mentioned in my last game review that the vets in Summer League are expected to look a lot better than the new guys. Well, when this happens, teams can shut the vet down as dominating lesser competition doesn’t really help improve your game (quick life lesson, this goes for anything competitive. If you want to get better at something, play against people better than you, dominating lesser players doesn’t make you better). With that said, after looking like a man among boys last time out, Jaden Springer did not suit up for this game. I don’t know if he will play in the rest of their games or not.
For the guys who did play, I thought both Drew Peterson and Jordan Walsh looked much better in this game, which by the way, felt much more of a Summer League game than the first one. Peterson stopped trying to do too much and let the game come to him much better in this one. It resulted in him shooting 4 for 8 from three and grabbing 5 boards and 3 assists. Walsh, who admitted he played bad last game, also played much more within himself. I thought he made a lot of good decisions out there; he just was not very effective. He was 0-5 from deep but he did fill out the stat sheet with 6 rebounds, 2 helpers, 3 steals, and a block. The Celtics blocked 9 shots last night and it felt like a lot more than that.
Speaking of blocks, Neemias Queta dominated this game in the paint. He blocked three shots, again, felt like more, and grabbed a game high 8 rebounds. He was the games high scorer with 22 on 7-10 shooting and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. He still doesn’t have the best finish at the rim but his energy on both sides of the court puts him in position to do good things for his team.
It was opposite day for Baylor Scheierman. Last game he airballed his first shot then went on to have a good shooting night. Last night he made his first shot, a top of the key three, and the missed every other shot he took. The good news is Baylor doesn’t seem to be just a shooter. He had 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. He is a very active player. He goes after rebounds on both ends and loose balls as well. He even dove into the front row, taking some poor guy out, to save a ball and get the Celtics and extra possession. His passing was on display again. He had a nice ally-oop pass after driving a close out from the corner. The thing I want to see from Baylor in the next two games is more ball handling and driving to the basket. He did it a little in the first game, but I want to see him be more aggressive trying to score. Or at least get in the paint and create for others.
The other rookie, Anton Watson looked a lot better in his second game. Watson was much more active this game and made more of an impact on both ends of the floor. It’s good to see him be more involved. Hopefully as the Summer League moves on, he becomes more comfortable and does even more. He made 2 of 3 shots and 3 of 4 free throws. He is listed as having gone 0-1 from three but I could have sworn he made a three. Maybe he had a foot on the line. He grabbed 7 rebounds which is a big improvement from last game and he an assist, steal, and block.
JD Davison I thought was better last game than he was in this one. He shot Ok but some of his decision making wasn’t as good as it could be. He did throw a bunch of lobs to Queta showing off their G League chemistry. His ball handling left a lot to be desired. It seems he can lose the ball when pressured. That’s not a good thing if he wants to play in the NBA.
Jahmi’us Ramsey still looks like he is all about getting his own. He doesn’t look like he is playing in the offense and he kept getting caught in the air after driving into the defense with no plan. He has skills and can shoot, he just needs to play within the offense better. Ron Harper Jr received a camp invite from the Celtics. He had a quiet game last night. I don’t see anything notable about him. Maybe he practices really good.
Jaelen House got in for a couple of minutes. Man is he small. He is listed as 6 feet tall but I question that. He looked like a kid out there. He is skinny too so it makes it look worse. He does seem like he is trying to be a pest on defense, getting up on guys with the ball. That’s what you have to do as an undersized guy if you want to make it to the NBA. He didn’t take a shot but he did have a block because the Celtics were blocking everything.
One last note, Bronny James looks just like his father. Even has the resting bitch face during the game. He is not as big as his dad but he is built like him and he moves like him. He does not play basketball like him. The Celtics next game is on Wednesday at 5:30. That’s a much better time for me. Hopefully I will be bale to get my review up shortly after the final whistle.
