WrestleMania 40 Preview

We are just about two weeks away from the granddaddy of them all.  The Showcase of the Immortals.  The biggest nights in sports entertainment.  Wrestlemania 40.  Obviously, the biggest storyline heading into the weekend is Cody and Rollins vs. the Bloodline.  I have a lot to say about how that should go down, but first, let’s talk about some of the other matches on the card.

Uso vs. Uso is an interesting match.  It will be the 3rd time brothers have faced each other at Mania.  4th if you count Kane and the Undertaker.  It will be the first time twins will be facing each other.  We have seen both Jimmy and Jay wrestle singles matches, but this one is different.  They say styles make fights.  Sometimes you can get a couple of guys with similar styles to put on a really good match.  I’m interested to see what happens when two guys who are pretty much the exact same person wrestle each other.  Their athletic ability should make it a good match.  I think it would be really cool if they found a way to make Rikishi the guest referee.  It would make sense from a “fairness” storyline.  Obviously, he wouldn’t be biased, and his being there would be a good reason for Solo to stay out of it.  If his father tells him to stay out, he’ll listen to him.  The WWE has always liked to bring back stars for Mania. This would be a perfect opportunity.

Gunther vs. Sami for the IC title should be a great match.  It has the chance to steal the night.  As I said, styles make matches, and these two styles match up perfectly.  Gunther, with his hard-hitting dominate style and Sami being a master of fighting from underneath, should put in a classic match.  I think Gunther has to drop the belt.  If not now to Sami, then when and to who?  It’s time for Guther to move into the heavyweight championship picture.  And with Sami, they have someone who is a big enough star to finally beat Gunther.  I am interested to see how they use Gable between now and the match. Does he help Sami, or does he become an instigator.  Speaking of Gable, I guess with the way the fans have rallied around him, they could have Gunther retain and then drop the belt to Gable at the next ppv but I think Zayn beating him at Mania is the better idea.

I think the second biggest storyline for this years Mania is the Judgment Day.  As of now, they have two matches in Philla, the tag team championship ladder match, and Rhea is defending her title against the Man, Becky Lynch.

I feel they are the second biggest storyline because there is a real question of where the WWE goes with them.  They have been a dominant group for a while now, not to mention my favorite.  Does this continue through Mania?   Are they going to stay dominant?  Are they even going to stay together?  Where does El Idolo fit?  Is he going to join a group where he isn’t the leader?   Will he try to take over?  Will that lead to their breakup?  If they are going to break up, will they drop their gold ahead of it?  Lot of questions to be answered in the next couple of weeks.

Both Rhea and the tag champs have held their titles long enough where you would think they are due to drop them.  Both of their matches are matches you could see them losing.  Losing a ladder match is never a bad loss nor is losing to Becky Lynch.  By the way, 12 people in a ladder match is a lot of people in a ladder match.  A lot of people.  But I digress.

If I had to guess, I would think Finn and Damian drop the tag titles.  They will have held them for 162 days by the time Mania rolls around.  It feels longer than that.  Nowadays, that’s not a particularly long reign, but it is respectable.  The reasons I think they will drop them are 1) Making it a huge ladder match makes it easy for them to lose and to drop the belts without losing any status.  2) Winning the title at Mania will be a big moment for whoever grabs the titles and a great way to kick off their run as champs.  And 3) El Senior Money in the Bank has to cash in soon.  Will they have him do it while still holding the tag team titles?  I doubt it.  Rollins defends his title against McIntyre on day 2.  Having Judgment Day drop the belts on day 1 would set up the cash in perfectly.  It just makes sense.  Then, the WWE could keep Judgment Day relevant and dominate without the tag titles.  Or, they could use the cash in, successful or not, as a tention point leading to their break up.  Again, there are a lot of ways they can go with this.

A quick aside about the tag team title match.  What if WWE has two teams win.  A guy from two different teams each grabs a different belt.  Could they use that to finally separate the titles?  It’s a great idea if they do want to separate them.  If they don’t want to separate them, they really need to officially combine them on the RAW after Mania.  Having the champs carry around 4 belts is just dumb.

As far as Mami goes,  I think she retains.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Becky won, but I don’t think Rhea is done being champion.  She is as big of a star as there is in wrestling right now and I think WWE is going to keep riding her stardom.

Also, I think the big money match is her vs. Cargill for the title.  How soon will they be looking to have that match?  I don’t know.  I was kind of expecting Cargill to win the Rumble and set it up for Mania.  Obviously, that didn’t happen.  Will they set the match up for Summerslam, or do they want to build up Cargill and have it headline Mania day 1 next year?  They have been presenting Cargill as a star, so I don’t think they will look to build her up too much before throwing her into the title picture.  That would work with a Summerslam match, which would mean Rhea can’t drop the belt.  If they are going to wait until next Mania, there would be plenty of time for Mami to regain the championship before then.  Of course, I could be way off base with my Cargill assessment.

One more thought about the Judgment Day and the Archer of Infamy.  What if they have him cash in on the IC title?  They could have either Gunther or Sami win a brutal match and then have Priest and the boys come out and beat down the winner some more and have Priest cash in.  Then he can feud with Gable.  It could be Judgemant Day vs. Alpha Academy.  Sami vs. Gable doesn’t really work unless one of them turns heel, and they did tease El Senior Money in the Bank cashing in on Gunther.  I think this could work.  Plus, that would allow Rollins to retain against McIntyre and then feud with Gunther.  This makes a lot of sense.

That brings us to the Bloodline.  First thing first, I am not a Cody Cry Baby.  I am a fan of Cody, but I think it should be a long hard road for him to finish his story.  If it’s easy, it’s boring.  That why he had to lose last year.  Showing up, winning the Rumble, and then winning the title on his first try was just too easy.  Him just doing the same thing this year feels way too easy as well.  But here we are.  I was all for them swerving to Rock vs. Reigns, but after the fan reaction, you can’t really blame them for going back to Cody.  The whole point is to make Cody an even bigger star than he is.  It worked.  Not how they intended it to, but it worked.  And very importantly, they were smart enough to switch back rather than force the Rock v Reigns match.

So now that we are at the point of the two matches, the tag match night 1 and the championship match night 2, here’s what should happen.

The stipulation for the tag team match that the Bloodline is banned from the championship match makes me believe the Rock and Reigns have to win that match.  There are multiple reasons why.  For one, as I have said, it can’t be easy for Cody.  If finishing the story is supposed to be an accomplishment, it has to be a struggle, an odyssey.  He has to over come obstacle after obsticle.  Eliminating the Bloodline as an obsticle lessens the challenge too much.

Another reason is that Reigns has been champion for 4 years now.  In pretty much all, or actually all of his matches, he has had help from the Bloodline.  If he finally wrestles a match by himself and loses, what does that say about his historic championship reign?  It makes him look awful.  It makes the past four years look awful.  To have a historic title run be completely based on cheating would be awful.  You know, unless you’re the Patriots.  Then apparently it’s fine.  But I digress.  Now, if Roman is going to win, well, then it can be one on one.  It would do a lot to further legitimize his run as champion.  It would also bury Cody a bit, but then he could spend the next two years building back up and truely earn finishing his story.  But that is too good to actually happen.  I love Triple H’s booking, but not even he has that in him.

Another reason Cody and Rollins have to lose the tag match is because they need to set up Rock vs. Reigns for whenever the Rock comes back.  They have been hinting at it a bit, but they will have to bring it home before the Rock leaves.  The best way to do this is to have the Rock turn on Reigns at Mania.  He can’t do this if he’s barred from ring side.  Rock doesn’t have to directly cost Reigns the match by attacking him or anything, he can just keep Solo or Jimmy from interfering at the key moment.  One good promo later, and we have the biggest main event in decades.

Plus, is Roman going to lose twice in one weekend? He hasn’t lost in years. He going to lose twice at Mania? I guess they could have the Rock lose the match, which would force Roman to go it alone on night two.  Roman loses and then blames the Rock, setting up their match.

There are a lot of different ways the WWE can go with this storyline.  Hopefully they don’t take the easy way.  The Bloodline has been the best story they have had in decades.  They can’t go with a boring ending.  Throw another swerve or two in there before  putting it to bed.  Here’s hoping the Head of the Table retains and sets off all the Cody Cry Babies.
