There has been an update on Gerrit Cole’s injury. The report is that he will miss at least 1 to 2 months and that he is going to LA for an in person examination by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. The reports are that the MRI showed no tear in his UCL, but there was swelling in his elbow.
The 1 to 2 months is really a meaningless idea until he is examined by the specialist. I guess right now is that that is the best case scenario. I am very uneasy having an opinion prior to the examination. This seems like it will not be a season ending injury and that the Yankees dodged a bit of a bullet, but anything can happen at the examination. I don’t want to get my hopes up. If I do, they will most definitely be crushed. So, really, we are all still in a holding pattern until Dr. ElAttrache makes his diagnosis.
Another development that has come from this is a report out of Chicago that the Yankees have reopened trade negotiations with the White Sox for Dylan Cease. I hate this idea. I don’t think Cease is particularly good. He has had 1 good season, which was really good as he came in second in the Cy Young vote. His two seasons before that were not good, and he wasn’t good last season. I really don’t want to give up assets for a guy who is probably average. Also, the word is that the Sox are coveting Spencer Jones in any deal. Screw that. It’s good that the Yankees are standing pat with their unwillingness to move Jones. I much rather the Yankees go with a young prospect as their rotation replacement than to trade for Cease, especially now that it seems Cole might not miss the entire season.
UPDATE…THIS LAST PART IS MOOT. Cease was just traded to San Diego.
