“My Brain Is Better Than Everybody’s”

The title of this article is one of my favorite quotes by Dr. Sheldon Cooper from the show The Big Bang Theory.  I really relate to it.  For reasons way beyond my comprehension, I see sports on a much higher level than everyone else seems to.  I don’t know why this is but the people who play, coach, manage, and cover sports just don’t understand concepts that seem so obvious to me and clearly make the most sense.  I am going to rant about these as they come up.  Last night’s Celtics loss to the Hawks is a great example of one of these coming up.  I’ll explain.

Yankees Spring Training Observations

Spring Training has ended and the new season is about to begin.  The New York Yankees are about to launch their latest march toward winning their 28th World Series.  But before we embark on this 6 month, 162 game marathon of ups and downs, wins and losses, highlights and low lights we call a baseball season, let’s look back at all that happened in Florida this spring and see where the team stands.

This and That

How excited are you right now?  Right?  You never thought you would see the day.  You believed the glory days were over.  There was a hole in your soul that would never be filled again.  But alas, today is your lucky day.  The hole is filled.  The glory days have returned.  That’s right!  It’s time for another installment of my world famous This and That column! Try to contain your excitement.  If you are new, welcome.  This is my way of writing about a bunch of smaller topics from around the sports world and well, sometimes other places.  Let’s jump in.

WrestleMania 40 Preview

We are just about two weeks away from the granddaddy of them all.  The Showcase of the Immortals.  The biggest nights in sports entertainment.  Wrestlemania 40.  Obviously, the biggest storyline heading into the weekend is Cody and Rollins vs. the Bloodline.  I have a lot to say about how that should go down, but first, let’s talk about some of the other matches on the card.

The Results Are In

The diagnosis is in, and it seems as if the Yankees have dodged a bullet.  Well, maybe it caught them in the leg.  Gerrit Cole has been examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache and he will officially avoid Tommy John surgery.  At least for now.  According to the New York Post, the plan is for him to miss about two months and use rest and rehab to heal his elbow along with some “conservative, nonsurgical treatment.”

The Post Trade Deadline Boston Bruins

The NHL trade deadline came and went today so let’s take a look at what the Bruins did and where the team stands with 17 games left in the regular season.

The first move the Bruins made was to trade Luke Toporowski and a conditional 6th round pick to the Minnesota Wild for left winger Pat Maroon.  In theory I like this trade.  First off, the Bruins didn’t give anything up to get Maroon.  Toporowski is 23 years old and not much of a prospect and who cares about a 6th round pick.  Maroon is the type of player the Bruins could use in that he plays with a lot of grit and snarl.  He’s the type of guy that will throw his weight around and stand up for his teammates and is more than happy to drop the gloves.  He is not much of an offensive player, though he did once score 27 goals in a season with Edmonton, but he has a specific role to play and he plays that role as well as you can.  He’s a 4th liner that will piss off the other team as he has done plenty of times with the Bruins.  To the point where Jack Edwards once got in trouble because he made fun of Maroon’s weight.  Even in today’s game you need a guy like this on your team.

Prospect Watch, the Beginning

Man do I love baseball.  And man do I love the New York Yankees.  We are a week into spring training and I am so excited for the season.  I was actually disappointed the Yanks had an off day this week.  Like, they couldn’t have just thrown a bunch of minor leaguers out there and had a game?  Come on.  Oh well.

While it’s cool to see guys like Judge and Cole back in the pinstripes, and new guys like Soto, Verdugo, and Strowman, make their debuts, what I really love about spring training is watching the young guys.  I read about these guys all season long and I check out the box scores and their stays throughout the year but I never really get to see them play.  I’ve seen Verdugo and Strowman and the other vets play. I know how Cole and Soto and the rest of the established players are going to play this year.  There are really just three veterans worth watching this spring.  Rodon, Cortez, and Rizzo.   Rodon and Nester are the biggies.  They need to be good this season for the Yankees to be serious contenders.  Rodon needs to figure things out and Nester has to return to form.  They have each had a start as of this writing and they both looked fine.  It will not be until they get further into the spring and start throwing more than a couple of innings per game before we will be able to tell where they are at.
